It's A Love Hate Relationship

In this picture Wyatt and Huck look so sweet and innocent.  Huck usually is sweet and innocent, but Wyatt, well, he is deceiving.  For the most part him and Huck get along really well.  Wyatt has been good for Huck as far as playing with one another, chasing eachother, and getting exercise....then there is the downside.  Every once in awhile Wyatt will go after Huck.  By go after him I mean, biting him, barking, growling, to the point where he has bit Huck in his ears SEVERAL times and Huck has bled.  They got into a fight just after Christmas so bad that I was shaking after it was over.  Luckily my dad was at my house (Matt was in New Orleans) and he literally pulled Wyatt off of Huck and threw him across the room.  Wyatt by no means was hurt, but the fact Wyatt gets such a death grip on Huck is very scary.  It's mostly if there is food around or if a little crumb falls on the floor.  Wyatt  is so worried Huck is going to get the crumb before he does then all hell breaks loose.  This past Friday they were both oustide, I've learned to put them out when we are eating.  Apparently they got into it outside and we were unaware of it until Matt and Olivia were out playing with them.  Huck had blood all over his head and dripping down his neck.  Matt got a closer look and Wyatt bit a hole in Huck's ear. The worst it has been.  We had to give Huck a bath and we put neosporin and wrapped his ear up with gauze.  He looked like a war victim.  That night we decided it's probably best to find Wyatt a new home.  He is a good dog....however I think he would do better if he was the only dog in a household.  I hate to give him away because like I mentioned earlier he is a good dog, he just has the moments and it he gets nasty really quick.  I just don't know what to do.  We are sending Huck to my parents while we are on vacation, but since they already have 2 dogs of their own 4 dogs would be a bit too much.   So, we have a room reserved for Wyatt at Pet Suites.  I just don't know what to do.

What a hard decision, but probably the best one. I would be afraid that Wyatt might go after Olivia or the baby.
I think you are right in believing Wyatt would be better as the only dog. Is it an Alpha thing?
I know this has got to be difficult, pets are members of the family too, but it sounds like you are doing the best thing.

Sounds like Wyatt has to be a dominate dog, he needs to learn submission and unfortunately he needs to learn it from Huck who seems to be too submissive. Unless Huck steps up and defends himself things won't get better. I agree Wyatt needs a new home. I am so sorry, I know how hard a decision it must be! If you want to have 2 dogs, you will have to get a girl or another submissive dog like Huck.

wow. I bet that has to be so hard. Will Olivia be upset do you think? I ask because last year my daycare boy rhyan had to get rid of his dog because the dog gave him terrible asthma attacks. Everything was okay untl the dog left and Rhyan who was newly 3 at the time cried for days. He always told me that his mom didn't love his dog etc. His doctor told Amanda that if they ever have to do something like that again to explain it more BEFORE they do it. They also recommended giving him a stuffed dog to replace if you will the dog leaving. Olivia may be fine since she has Huck but I thought I would mention it. They finally bought Rhyan a cat because he couldn't get over it.
My biggest problem would be Olivia and the new baby..it would scare me that the dog would attack them over food. I think you are doing the best thing.

Awww, that's a tough situation.
I also think you are doing the right thing. You just can't have a dog like that around little kids - or Huck. Wyatt would be much happier somewhere else anyway. Where he can be "the dog" of the house.
