Words Of Wisdom...I Need Some Advice

Since everyone who reads my blog (atleast that comments) has potty trained atleast one child in their lifetime, I need some advice and suggestions. Olivia is doing sooooo good with using the potty. I don't even have to remind her to go (unless I see her grabbing herself then I will ask if she needs to go) She's had only 1 accident and the rest of the time she is doing it all on her own. I am not comfortable going out in public without her wearing a diaper. We've been home for the most part all week and I have been letting her run around with her nightgown and no undies (since its quicker and easier for her to just whip up her nightgown & sit down to pee) My questions are: When should I take her out in public without a diaper? How long should I wait etc...what has been your experience(s)? I haven't had a diaper on her all day today. When she woke up this morning she took it off and we haven't put one on her. Now, if she decides to take a nap (which just in the past week she hasn't hardly taken any naps) I will put one on her and when she goes to bed tonight. Other than that she is FREE. Friday when I watch Gavin & Avery I am going to take her potty with us, only because she is too short to get on a big toilet and she can sit on her little potty all by herself. I will have to put a diaper on her on our way to pick Gavin up from school, but once we get to Amy's I will take it off of her. ****Don't worry Amy, I won't let her pee on anything**** I just don't want to confuse her with putting a diaper on when we go places and leaving it off at home. I guess that's normal to do? She's a smart child and I really don't think I will have any issues with her getting confused, but I want to make sure I am doing the right things. Any advice you have will be great! Thanks! Please keep in mind that she is only 23 months!

Yeah, no pee on my floors - I just steamed cleaned the carpets ;) haha - my floors have seen so much pee a little more won't hurt!
I'm not quite sure what the best way for you is, since mine were a whole year older when they potty trained and it is much easier to reason with them when they are a little older. So, your experience might be different. However, I pretty much started taking mine out without diapers when they were able to go both poop and pee at home and able to tell me when they had to go. Even then, with Avery especially, I would take extra clothes to change into. Avery actually always did better when we were out than at home - it was like she knew she had to use the potty when we were out but was a little lazier at home. You could always go ahead and try it - just make her go potty right before you leave and then bring some extra clothes, along with large ziploc bags for the dirty clothes. Or, what about pull-ups to be used as underwear when you're out? I know those work for some kids, but mine always viewed them as diapers, but they might work better for Olivia since she is a little younger and you could just tell her they are underwear (they have princess ones).

I used pull ups, that way Ryan could pull them up and down like underwear and not like a diaper but no mess if he did have an accident. They come in characters too. Then when we found real underwear he really wanted, BUZZ, I kept telling him to make sure he didn't go pee pee on BUZZ. That real got him because he was obsessed with BUZZ. Buy that was just me, some people say never to use pull ups?? It worked great for me, I didn't rush Ryan and he just did it himself. It was actually easy. When I first started he was almost 3 and I got a bowl with little prizes in it, if he went he got one. The first day he went about 10 times just to get a prize but it worked.

She's got princess underwear that she wears and LOVES. We also give her a piece of chocolate every time she goes. She gets two if she goes poo poo. I haven't pushed her at all, its all her doing, so we've went with her lead.

I have potty trained a gazillion kids(I can remember 8) and my experience is that they do fine at home with nothing on but when you add underwear or a diaper, they go. I have mistakely thought they were potty trained way before they actually were because they could do it naked all day. I would add panties now at home since she will have to wear them out. Once she can do it at home with panties on, she really does have it. Then, you can add oversized pants that she can pull down, then go to her regular pants. All the while she is learning to hold it a little longer. That is always been my process and it has worked. Renee is Olivia's age and when she was 18 months, her mom did what you have already done and then came to me and said that she was potty trained. I tried it and she peed on herself all day because I was using panties. WHen i let her do it naked, she had it...same with Sawyer. When I added a diaper or any pants, they went. So the panty part is the big hurdle. If she does that she is ready. If not, keep doing what you are doing and save on diapers.

I used to use pull-ups for public outings and I would let my boys put their cool underwear over top of the pull-up, they thought that was soo cool. Pull-ups are nice since you don't have to tear them off, you just pull them down.

We tried doing the sit on the potty every 45 minutes thing and that did NOT work. It was so stressful! If she is already wanting to potty train at 23 months, that's awesome! My girls were both turning 3 when they were potty trained.

I also would put a pull up on them and let them wear their undies over the pull up. It worked well for us. And it only took 2 weeks to fully potty train Alyssa and maybe a week or so for Savannah.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! She is wearing clothes today (per Sonya's suggestion w/underwear) and she went potty all by herself. Pulled her pants down and went! WHOO HOO!

wow, then she is truly feeling the sensation. Keep with that and take small trips where you can get to a potty quickly. Sounds like she is just an early birdie!!
