Baby Proofing

So the pediatrician told me that I should start baby proofing our house. While I was pregnant I did a little bit, but figured I had plenty of time to get things the way I want them. I started going thru our closets and bathrooms looking and seeing what I need to put up and away. Now I am starting to think I am paranoid! Everything little thing I find I find a reason why or how Olivia could hurt herself! Anyone have any suggestions as to what is the most important things to get up. I know the obvious things as far as any medications, cleaning products etc...but is there anything I might not be thinking about as far as what I need to baby proof? As of right now I am going thru our linen closet and we have kept our towels, toilet paper, and sheets in there, but since the shelves are high up I bought storage bins to store thigs in. I am putting all medications, lotions, nail care products basically anything I think she might find interesting and try to eat up on the highest shelf. I was thinking about putting our towels underneath the bathroom sinks along with toilet paper. Think thats a good idea or what? The linen closet is big so I have plenty of room to store things. I don't know! I am focusing on one thing each day this week (its my project I made up for myself) so tomorrow I will focus on the pantry and the laundry room, Wednesday I will focus on kitchen cabinets and Thursday I'm not sure yet, maybe the fridge since we keep wine and beer in the fridge. The doctor also told me that anything that can fit thru a toilet paper roll is too small. I've been going around the house putting things thru it!

Putting things high up in your closet is a great idea. Also make sure all outlets have covers in them and that all electrical cords are well hidden and hard to get too. The best way to do this is to get on your hands and knees and crawl thru the rooms to see what she would find interesting because you will be at her level. That's what I did when my kids were small. I have also made a habit to always cook on the back burners of the stove so they can't reach up and get burned. I wouldn't burn any candles on low surfaces that she could reach and I would put away any nick nacks that you don't want her touching. You can bring them back out once she is older. I went three years without nick nacks on my tables! ha ha

Make sure all change (money) is kept high up. Put saftely latches on your stove knobs, cabinets and faucets. Gosh, there is so many things you can do, I just can't think of it all! If I think of anything else, I will let you know! It's been years for me! ha ha

Corners of tables!! They are murder when they start walking. they fall so much, i had wonderful little stick pads that covered the corners of everything. Plus watch Huck's food. They love to try dog food. It won't hurt her but it would be gross.

Outlet covers and cords.
Once she's taller you need to put a high lock or a door knob cover on outside doors and doors near the stairs.

We had to put our videos and dvds in a locking cabinet because Ryan could get them all down and out of there cases in about 1 minute. again it won't hurt her but it is a pain to clean up all the time.

Oh and they shove lots of stuff into the vcr!

Okay, so everyone is taking my ideas! The cords are a biggie. My kids still play with them!

Also if you have drapes or blinds watch the cords from them.

Make sure your trashcans are put away. They tip over easily and are full of ineresting things.

As soon as necessary, put locks on all doors you don't want her to be able to open!!!

I would say to put that glass table away that's in your living room. Tables that high are easy targets for babies when they start walking - they fall so much and being in the center of the room makes it that more of a baby magnet!
